Boston - Chinatown

Cingular Wireless and Various Other Carrier Sites

These various cell sites from the Chinatown and Financial Sections of Boston show how the carriers are trying to fit in on buildings, and cover the expressway that currently runs through the city above ground. The central artery project will result in most of the traffic covered by these antennas being moved underground.

These two sector cells were placed before the artery was placed underground through the city. I believe these are Cingular and Verizon Wireless, but I do not have any confirmation.

In the photo above, you can see how the antenna were painted to camouflage the antenna to fit into the buildings brick and granite face. I am not sure what the second antenna from the left is. It is smaller than antenna usually used for cellular. It may be used for Verizon for locating handset position for e911.

Above, you can see 1 Financial Place in the background, and chinatown on your left. The brick building in the center of the photo is a two sector Cingular Wireless site. I believe the site on the building on the left of the above photo is a Nextel site. Below is a close up shot of the Cingular site antenna.

Above is a directional antenna for one of the Cingular sectors, along with a number of omnidirectional antenna mounted below the directional one.

Below is the equipment cabinets for the Cingular site.

Above and below is a closer picture of the two sectors of Cingular antenna. Also, above you can also see the omnidirectional antenna.

Above is a close up of the omni-directional antenna. I am not sure what these are used for, my guess is they are used for Cingular Interactive data.

Above and below are the GPS antenna for the Cingular GSM service.

Above and below are Nextel antenna, also camouflaged to blend into the building facade.

Above and below are close ups of the Nextel antenna. Note the size of the antenna. Also, in the antenna above you can see the antenna tilted downward, to proved coverage on the roadway below. Also note that the two center antenna, one transmit and one receive, are tilted significantly more than the outer ones.
